A great way to get to know people through lively events is through the The Student Event Planners Association. SEPA is an organization on campus that focuses on building community throughout the UMHB campus with events.
The officers of the organization all major in Mass Communication with a concentration in Public Relations. They consist of Senior President Evie Parks, Junior Vice President Victoria Borders, Senior Treasurer Kallie Young, Senior Event Coordinator Abbie Ferrer, Junior Event Coordinator Lindsey Goertz, and Junior Event Coordinator Julia Knight.
“Oh, I love SEPA. It is one of my favorite organizations on campus.” Parks said. “It’s such a creative outlet for PR students and a sweet way to get insight and experience from other people. Doing it can give them hands-on experience that helps show them if they are really interested in event planning or not.”
SEPA held an event called ‘See Ya Later Summer!’ in August to kick off the semester. They had watermelon, goofy sunglasses, and bubbles. On September 3rd, they had their first meeting at Granny’s Shaved Ice. All the people who went got to make their own Shaved Ice with the owner. This week, SEPA hosted their Headshots Event at McLane Great Hall. Abbie Ferrer was taking the headshots as well as less serious photos for people while the other officers helped set up. ““We came up with it at our last meeting when we made our own snow cones at Granny's.” Parks said. “We were talking to Skylar, the owner of Granny's, and she kind of threw the idea out there. She's always coming up with new ideas for things that we can do.”
The members of SEPA are all close, according to Lindsey Goertz. “All of these girls are so wonderful.” Goertz said. “I became friends with them as classmates and grew with them as we all have PR majors. Getting to run a student organization that I'm so passionate about and building community through events with people that I care so deeply about has just been so amazing.” SEPA plans to host a Floral Arrangement event on November 12th.
